Victoria Works

Victoria Works

4th year thesis project - 8 months.

This project focussed on the redevelopment of one of Dundees last disused jute mills, turning the 12 building complex into a creative hub for design thinking and practice, with connections to both the University of Dundee and Abertay University.

With a dissertation entitled ‘The reclamation and reuse of building materials within architecture and interior design’ my thesis project embodied a lot of the information and research found when developing my dissertations.

Combining new features with as much existing structure and reused materials as possible, to create dynamic spaces showcasing features of the original buildings working in harmony with the new additions.

Light carpet

This project was based around the renovation of a steep hill in Broughty Ferry.

With Dundee being the ‘sunniest city in Scotland’ our solution was to resurface the road with solar road panels. The panels collect sunlight and converts it to power the surrounding community, aswell as addressing local complaints about the road like creating better traction, and equipping it with better lighting.

The solar panels contain an LED layer, which can be programmed to display patterns, lighting the surrounding areas in the evenings.

This project was showcased at:

GIDE (Group for International Design Education), Lugano, Switzerland.

Dundee Sustainability Festival, Dundee.

Napier University, Edinburgh.

Cantina

5 week competition project supported by the chairperson of Dundee Universities Students Association.

This project was based around the redesign of the DJCAD canteen.

The current canteen has a rather sad layout, and was never used for longer than it took to eat a baked potato.

With the canteen being the central meeting place for all courses across the school, I developed my design around the idea of indirect communication, using graffiti and customisable aspects into space. Introducing outdoor and lounge seating to make the space more versatile.
With the ‘Cantina’ having it’s own outside entrance, the possibility for it to become an evening restuarant/bar was a consideration.

This project was my gateway into computer rendering, producing my very first 3d computer renders.

Hotel project

A two week competition project provided by ID Studio, International Design Studio.

This project was the redesign of a room of the InterContinental Hotel in London, combined with a technological aspect.

I decided to play on the old idea of there being a Gideons bible hiding in a drawer by the bed, by introducing devices like ipads as a standard part of the hotel experience. Guests could use the device for typical internet use, hotel facilities, and of course religious literature.

With good feedback from this project, I went on to work for IDStudio.

Furniture

Images coming soon.

A fun little furniture project. ‘Squint’

The influence with this design was with that one table that always has to have a folded coaster under one leg. Taking that to an extreme, we producing a table that doesn’t seem to function as a horizontal plane.

In its ‘squint’ state, using the slanted coasters on the table produces a flat surface again.

Alternatively, stacking the coasters and placing them under the shorter leg returns the table to a nice flat table.

Bomb project

This quick two day ‘bomb’ project was based around the word care.

Working in a small group comprising of members from across the four years of the IED course, we developed a series of prints based around extreme care regarding everyday choices usually taken as being common sense.
